A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit 70 km SSE of Raoul Island at 3:19 am on Tuesday 30th September 2008. Raoul Island contains an active volcano which last erupted in 2006. Earthquakes of this size can sometimes disrupt nearby volcanoes.
